Did you know?

The most commonly used toast in Irish is sláinte! (health!). Here are some other toasts:

Sláinte mhór.
Good health (literally, big health).

Sláinte mhaith agat i bhfad ó bhrón.
Good health to you far from sorrow.

Sláinte na bhfear agus go maire na mná go deo.
Health to the men and may the women live forever.

Fad saoil agat, gob fliuch agus bás in Éirinn.
May you have a long life, a wet mouth and death in Ireland.

Numerous Irish proverbs refer to drinking, including the following:

Is túisce deoch ná scéal.
(A drink precedes a story, i.e. one should offer a drink before asking for news.)

Doirt do dheoch is beidh tart ort.
(Spill your drink and you’ll be thirsty, i.e. wilful waste makes woeful want.)

Nuair a bhíos an braon istigh bíonn an chiall amuigh.
(When the drop is inside sense is outside, i.e. drink makes people act foolishly.)
